Specialized imaging and diagnostic techniques that provide visual and structural information to complement laboratory findings and guide treatment decisions.
St. George Hospital offers a range of imaging and specialist diagnostic techniques as part of comprehensive patient evaluation. These include conventional imaging modalities as well as specialized techniques used in integrative medicine.
Ultrasound provides real-time, radiation-free imaging of soft tissues, organs, and blood vessels. Infrared thermography detects surface temperature variations that may indicate underlying inflammation, vascular dysfunction, or metabolic changes. Darkfield microscopy examines a drop of live blood under specialized lighting to assess red blood cell morphology, white blood cell activity, and plasma quality.
Each imaging modality provides different types of information. Ultrasound reveals structural details; thermography maps functional temperature patterns; darkfield microscopy offers real-time cellular assessment. Together with laboratory data, these techniques create a comprehensive diagnostic picture that informs individualized treatment planning.
Imaging appointments are typically scheduled as part of the initial diagnostic workup. Ultrasound examinations take 15-30 minutes and require no preparation. Thermography is non-contact and takes approximately 20 minutes. Darkfield microscopy requires a single drop of blood from a finger prick and provides immediate visual results. All results are discussed with the patient during a physician consultation.
